Fall 2025 GSI Teaching Conference

Thursday, August 21 (International GSIs) &
Friday, August 22 (all GSIs)

The Fall Teaching Conference is held the Thursday and Friday before classes begin. Its purpose is to orient graduate students to their GSI role and equip them to begin teaching. All international first-time GSIs must attend on Thursday; all first-time GSIs, international and domestic, must attend on Friday. The Fall 2025 Teaching Conference runs August 21 and 22, 2025.

Teaching Conference Schedule

Thursday, August 21, 2025, 9:30 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.  (for international students only)

9:30 a.m. – 10:30 a.m. Round One Panel
10:30 a.m. – 11 a.m. Break
11:00 a.m. – 12 p.m. Round Two Panel

Friday, August 22, 2025, 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. (for all GSIs)

Group 1 Schedule
(Group 1 Discipline Clusters: Biological Sciences, Chemistry, Foreign Languages, Humanities, Physical Sciences, Quantitative Social Sciences, and Reading & Composition)

9:00 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. Discipline-Cluster Workshops (in person, on campus)
12:30 p.m. – 2:00 p.m. Break
2:00 – 4:30 p.m. Interactive Theater (in person, 155 Dwinelle Hall)
4:30 – 5:00 p.m. Academic Student Employee (ASE) Presentation* (in person, 155 Dwinelle Hall)

Group 2 Schedule
(Group 2 Discipline Clusters: Engineering, Computer Sciences, Quantitatives, Social Sciences (Non-Quant), and Studio Art & Environmental Design)

9:00 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. Interactive Theater (in person, 155 Dwinelle Hall)
11:30 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. Academic Student Employee Presentation* (in person, 155 Dwinelle Hall)
12:00 p.m. – 1:30 p.m. Break
1:30 p.m. – 5 p.m. Discipline-Cluster Workshops (in person, on campus)

*The Academic Student Employee (ASE) union orientation is offered in conjunction with the Teaching Conference. All first-time GSIs are required to attend this session if you have not previously attended an ASE orientation. Please note that the GSI Teaching & Resource Center does not manage the ASE orientation. Please contact [email protected] with any questions.

Teaching Conference Requirements and Registration

To receive credit for the GSI Teaching Conference, register and complete each of the requirements listed below.

1. Asynchronous Pre-Work (~1 hour to complete; due by 9 a.m. August 22, 2025)

2. Discipline-Cluster Workshop (Takes place on Friday, August 22, 2025)

3.5 hour workshop offered in person on day of conference.
 Your choice of discipline-cluster workshop should be based on your teaching assignment.

3. Interactive Theater (Takes place on Friday, August 22, 2025)

In-person 2.5-hour performance on day of conference.

4. IGSI Day Panels (for international GSIs only)

If you are an international GSI, you must register for and attend two 1-hour panels held over Zoom (in addition to attending Friday’s sessions).
Takes place on Thursday, August 21, 2025.

Please note that in addition to the Teaching Conference, general first-time GSI requirements include:

A. GSI Professional Standards and Ethics Online Course
5 modules with quizzes offered through a dedicated bCourses site.
(~5+ hours to complete)
Must be completed prior to interacting with students (online or in person) in your role as instructor.
Self-enroll in the 2025-2026 Ethics course

B. Departmental Pedagogy Course
A 300-level semester-long pedagogy seminar on teaching in the discipline offered by the GSI’s department.
Must be completed prior to or concurrent with first GSI appointment.
