Seminars and Workshop Series
The GSI Teaching and Resource Center offers annual seminars and workshop series on teaching in higher education.
Syllabus and Course Design Workshop Series:
This series is intended for GSIs who may need to prepare a syllabus for a Summer Session course, for a future semester, or for the academic job search. This year's sessions will be held on April 4, 11, 18, and 25, from 2 to 4 pm. Please see the Syllabus and Course Design web page for further information and to pre-register. The deadline for pre-registration is March 30.
Mentoring in Higher Education:
A one-unit course on mentoring is offered
each spring through the GSI Teaching & Resource Center's Graduate Student
Professional Development Program (GSPDP). This seminar will assist you
in mentoring undergraduates, establishing and working in the context of
mentoring relationships with faculty, and preparing for the mentoring
you will do in future academic careers. The course includes readings,
in-class discussion, short assignments, and an applied component of mentoring.
Other recent seminars include the following:
Course Grading Policies and Student Motivation: The overall purposes
of the seminar were 1) to explore the impact of course grading and grading
policies on student motivation to learn; 2) to examine critically grading
strategies designed to evaluate student course performance on the Berkeley
campus and beyond in a variety of course settings and disciplinary contexts;
3) to consider the role of GSIs in the process of student evaluation,
including the challenges presented by this responsibility and the impact
of this experience on a GSI's sense of professional development and career
preparation. The GSI Teaching & Resource Center collaborated on this
workshop with Martin Covington, Professor of Psychology and Presidential
Chair in Undergraduate Education.
Integrating Research Into Classroom Teaching: The GSI Teaching & Resource
Center, in collaboration with Professor Martin Covington, initiated a
working group on ways to integrate research into classroom teaching.
