Important Policy Updates & Deadlines for Spring 2027 First-Time GSIs
Are you planning to teach as a Graduate Student Instructor (GSI) for the first time in Spring 2027?
Please review the following key dates, requirements, and deadlines. These policies apply to all departments across campus, including undergraduate GSIs.
Key Appointment & Requirement Dates
- October 1, 2026: Language Proficiency Questionnaire Deadline: If you are a continuing student who needs to demonstrate oral English proficiency to serve as a GSI in Spring or Summer 2027, you must complete the questionnaire by October 1, 2026, to ensure you are tested by November 15, 2026.
- January 12, 2027: Official Appointment Start Date: Spring 2027 GSI appointments begin and pay starts on January 12 (the first official day of the semester), not on January 19 (the first day of classes). GSIs are expected to begin work on January 12.
- January 15, 2027: Mandatory Teaching Conference: All first-time GSIs must be on campus in person on Friday, January 15, 2027, to attend the Teaching Conference for First-Time GSIs. This conference is a paid component of your overall GSI workload.
Department Eligibility & Appointment Confirmation
Before issuing a written notice of appointment, hiring departments are required to confirm that all first-time GSIs:
- Will be on campus in person on January 15, 2027, for the mandatory teaching conference.
- Have fulfilled the oral English proficiency requirement and met key deadlines (where applicable).
These requirements ensure all instructors are fully supported and prepared to deliver high-quality instruction to Berkeley students.
