The Pre-Lab

For students, there is nothing worse than just going through the motions of a lab procedure without understanding its purpose, materials, or underlying concepts.

In preparing students for their lab, you should:

  • Help students understand the theories and principles addressed in the lab procedure.
  • Ensure students know how the lab fits into the course content.
  • Give students a conceptual framework for the lab, and outline the lab procedure and data analysis.
  • Give students an example of how to organize and prepare to perform lab analyses.
  • Discuss equipment and safety procedures and considerations.
