Fall 2002 Graduate Student Instructor Teaching and Orientation Conference

Thursday, August 22, 2002, and Friday, August 23, 2002

Each fall, the Graduate Student Instructor (GSI) Teaching and Resource Center presents a teaching and orientation conference for new GSIs on the UC Berkeley campus. We offer two days of speakers, panels, and workshops designed to help prepare students for their positions as GSIs at UC Berkeley. The first day, Thursday, August 22, 2002, is designed with international GSIs' needs in mind, but all new and continuing GSIs are invited to attend. All GSIs are invited to attend the second day, Friday, August 23, 2002. Lunch will be provided for both days. Below are schedules for this year's conference.


Day One: International Graduate Student Instructors (Other GSIs are welcome to attend)
Thursday, August 22, 2002, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Location: Dwinelle Hall

8:30 - 9 a.m. - Registration

9 - 10:30 a.m. - Plenary Session

Welcome: Linda von Hoene, Director of the GSI Teaching and Resource Center
Keynote Address: George Chang, Associate Professor of Nutritional Sciences
Roundtable: International GSIs and undergraduates discuss "The GSI-Undergraduate Teaching and Learning Environment."
Welcome: Joseph J. Duggan, Associate Dean of the Graduate Division

10:30 - 10:45 a.m. - Break

10:45 - 12:15 p.m. - Roles GSIs Play

GSI-undergraduate interactions.

12:15 - 1:15 p.m. - Lunch

1:15 - 2:45 p.m. - Challenges of the Classroom

Case studies on understanding and facilitating classroom dynamics.

3 - 4:30 p.m. - The Undergraduate at UC Berkeley

Panel discussion on who our students are and how to work effectively with them.

Opening Remarks: Linda von Hoene, Director of the GSI Teaching and Resource Center
Welcome: Mary Ann Mason, Dean of the Graduate Division; Robert Berdahl, Chancellor
Keynote Address: Margaret Conkey, Professor of Anthropology
Video Presentation: In a Class by Themselves: Graduate Student Instructors Teaching at UC Berkeley

10:15 - 10:30 a.m. - Break

10:30 - 12 noon - Discipline-Cluster Workshops, Part 1

Workshops addressing preparation for teaching, classroom dynamics, and resources for teaching.

12 noon - 1 p.m. - Lunch

1 - 2:30 p.m. - Discipline-Cluster Workshops, Part 2

Continuation of morning workshops.

2:45 - 3:45 p.m. - Focus Sessions, Round 1

Session topics include motivating students, working with student writing, teaching to diverse learning styles, integrating library research into teaching, among others.

3:55 - 5 p.m. - Focus Sessions, Round 2

Session topics include how to run effective discussion sections and labs.
